Synopsis

A steamy saga of love, passion, lust and greed, Egrets to the Flames introduces the Hamptons, a wealthy and privileged family of sugar cane growers. While the cane has brought the Hamptons enormous wealth, it also brings great misery. Each year, when the cane fields are set afire in preparation for harvest, the Hamptons’ palatial sugar estate is transformed into an inferno of smoldering heat, acrid smoke, and crazed egrets swarming above and diving into the flames.

This year, the heat is on for patriarch James Henry Hampton: someone must answer to forces seeking retribution for the cane’s egregious impact on the fragile environment and the exploitation of Jamaican sugar cane cutters.

As he juggles a wife and a mistress, James Henry’s family begins to unravel. He must fight to save son Henny from self-destruction and a disastrous marriage to a field hand’s pregnant daughter. Son Jeffry and his bride face immeasurable loss, while daughter Melisandra marries an impoverished prince intent on taking her riches at any cost. And despite her concern with appearances, wife Grace has a few unseemly secrets lurking below the surface.

But in the end, James Henry Hampton will face his toughest battle yet—a battle that may be his last.
